THE CHURCH HISTORY

1876-2024

The Mt. Mariah Missionary Baptist Church was organized in 1876 in a small community called Crabb Switch, Texas. Crabb was a large farming community. Most of the property in the area was owed by white men and farmed by African Slaves. Property owners and African Slaves in Texas didn’t receive the message about freedom of Slaves until 1865. Shortly, after receiving the message of freedom, a group of Slaves began meeting in their homes to worship and praise God. They looked forward to the day when they would worship in their own sanctuary.

In 1876, Deacons: Aaron Williams and the London Branch erected their first building. They called it Brush Harbor. This building was made of branches and wood from trees that they cut and shaped by hand. The group continued to worship in that location for several years. As the years passed, the congregation grew numerically and in the knowledge about sin, salvation, and the Savior Jesus Christ. Later Deacons: Charlie Crawford, Dellie Jackson, and Charlie Greer purchased a tract of land from Mr. Ellis Jones. Mr. Jones owned and farmed the property on Crabb River Road, Shell Gas Station and Burger King Franchise which decorates this community today. The congregation built their first church building on this site under the leadership of Reverend I.S. Branch. (First Pastor).

In 1900, the congregation continued to grow in Grace and in the knowledge of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Many souls were saved, and families envisioned a better future.

The names of Pastors and Members were Rev. C. Carter, Joe Williams, Dellie Jackson, Charlie Crawford, Peter Heard, Ed Branch, Elphus White, Thomas Wilkerson, Hattie Bailey, Etta Mae Turner, Rosie Jackson, and many others.

Later, Rev. Robert Brooks became Pastor. The members who served during his pastoral ship were Lee Drisdale, Listern Stewart, James Sparks, Rev. Thomas Wilkerson, Barbara Jackson, Beverly Turner, and others.

In 1986, Rev. Michael Mathis was called to pastor. The congregation continued to grow and improve. The church deeds and all legal documents were established, and the church exterior and the interior were remodeled. Some of the members who were present during Rev. Michael Mathis tenure were: Rev. Johnny Mathis, Leonard Bailey, Dora White Taylor, and other faithful members.

In 1989, Rev. Owen Spencer became the pastor. Rev. Spencer served faithfully for ten years, and several ministers were birth under his leadership: Rev. Dwaine Stewart, Rev. Charles Robinson, and Rev. Ronald McGuire and many others.  Rev. Spencer organized a youth ministry, he made many repairs to the church building and established the church 501c3. Rev. Spencer went home to be with the Lord in 1999.

The church mourned for 60 days before calling the present pastor, Rev. Larry L. Johnson in April of 1999. Rev. Larry Johnson came to Mt. Mariah Missionary Baptist church with a vision. In 2000 the church continued to grow spiritually, financially, and numerically under the leadership of pastor Larry Johnson.

In 2005 the church was damaged severely by Hurricane Katrina. Rev. Larry Johnson and the membership saw the need to build a new church in the year of 2011. They worshiped in that building for four years until being displaced by TXDOT. Pastor Johnson and the Mt. Mariah Missionary Baptist Church purchased property and is current building a new church edifice located at 1837 B.F. Terry Blvd., in the great city of Rosenberg, Texas. Pastor Larry Johnson has been Pastoring and preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ at Mt. Mariah for 24 years. he Glory.

The Mt. Mariah Baptist Church family is on the moved for God and we shall continue to press toward the mark of the high calling, which is in Christ Jesus.
